Ah, the Interlull. What joy.
International football for most of us these days is about as alluring as a Hugh Laurie Blues album. On an upbeat note for Spurs fans …just like The World According To Garp, we have nothing to fear on the Gareth Bale front as he is ‘pre-disastered’. At least it’s not his back.
The whole John Terry thing has be dredged up again of course. ‘I’m not everyone’s cup of tea,’ he told us. I’d say that’s fair comment. Unless you’re a clinical psychologist of course. Not so much a one dimensional social misfit, but a walking case study. There was a time when I saw JT as simply a deeply unpalatable figure of fun. But since he lost the England captaincy we have been exposed quite literally to a beast even more damaged and sinister than we first thought. In at least one post match Chelsea interview Terry appeared stripped to the waist bar the Captain’s armband slipped back onto the arm of his bare torso.
Son of convicted drug dealer, husband to a cautioned shoplifter. Urinater into pint pots …I am Maximus Unpleasantness and I will ‘ave me armband back!
I defy anyone to question that JT hasn’t seriously questioned getting a tattoo of the armband.
Next up is Fabio, I guess. The cool air of an Italian maestro dissolved minute by South African minute. What was left was a Spitting Image 2.0 puppet with spectacles fitted by the same people that do Heston Blumenthal.
Will Defoe score? Who knows or cares. Let’s hope that 3MP doesn’t get injured or kidnapped by wolves or whatever dark fates await those who go to Wales casually these days.
Andy Carroll Anytime Goalscorer in a protracted 0-1 is 16/1.

I had to read that about four times before I understood what you were trying to communicate :hae:
All you limeys sure do take a very cynical view to England’s qualifiers… I’ve got a double-header lined up tomorrow. First it’s Norway-Denmark at Nevada Smith’s, with decorous libations no doubt. Then out to New Meadowlands to take in USA-Argentina. I’m as excited as electrons in overheated Japanese fuel rods.
Well, there use to be time when watching England play was an exciting event, not anymore.
When we have players who either can’t be arsed or find it shameful to sing the national anthem and can’t be bothered to put any effort in and probably see playing for England is a good way of squeezing more money from their sponsers, why should I care more than they do?
I’m afraid that’s the sad state of our national team.
Just contemplating whether I should watch the England game and cheer on all those in England shirts with all of my heart, ie Terry, Cashley, Rooney, Gerrard……..eh nah.
is limeys racist or ethnic?is “limeys” racist or ethnic?
Yes Limey’s are an ethnic group. Traditionally they come from just south of the Sweaty’s of Sweatyland. Adjacent to the SheepBoverers and just across the water from the BogTrotters. Certainly not rascist.
that’s all right then – as long as it’s not a racist term of abuse
You forgot the SMOGGIES which is a long established term for those from Teesside. A lovely bunch. YouknowwhatImeanlike.
Smoggies are an underclass of Limey’s.

When was the last time when watching England was a must see match including friendlies?
For me it was when Glen Hoddle was Manager and Sven when he first started.
You didn’t watch the World Cup?
I watched most of the England games during the last world cup, the first game against the USA I was up for it, but I like everyone else could see what was going to happen.
The players did not seem up for it and rooney complained about being booed off the pitch for their abject perfomance.
Alot of people I know don’t bother watching friendlies anymore. It’s kinda sad as it did not use to be that way.
Fair points. Did think England looked a bit lackluster and out of sorts in SA.
That said, I do the English tend to expect too much of them. Sure there are plenty multimillionaire stars in the side, but they have never been genuine contenders for any tournament, at least in my lifetime.
Don’t know how old you are, bro, so I may be way off base. Still, it might be that the people you know who “don’t bother” with friendlies anymore are what is changing, rather than the national team/friendlies. As one grows older, so will responsibilities grow. While watching an England friendly may drop on their list of priorities, that doesn’t mean that the friendly has necessarily lost any importance. For many it’s easier to blame the world for changing, than accept that it is oneself who has changed.
I’m just saying, when I was a kid, I didn’t understand how anyone could have anything more important to do than watch a Norway – Liechtenstein friendly. Now I sometimes have to ‘force’ myself to watch them. Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m sure my 15 year streak of watching all Norway games live will come to an end with some ‘insignificant’ friendly.
Still, not being interested in a game that could earn points in a qualifier for you national team is completely alien to me. Inept management/lackadaisical players or not.
Now it is weekend. Hear me roar!
Wait, what year is it? 2011 you say? Better make that an 18 year streak.
God I’m getting old…
your making me think and it hurts
