Good Morning,

The first prattle of the season and it’s for the Europa. We’ve watched this game, this competition travel towards us for some time now and I’ve decided we really need to embrace it. It being …in Europe.

We need to distinguish ourselves and try at least to abandon this fast food attitude to football. Looking across a variety of teams forums as I do, there is a needy child element within most fan bases, all looking for confirmation that Messi has signed and that they’ve been given a bye to the Champions League final.

Life doesn’t work like that. Aside from once in a lifetime deals when the Treasurer of The Crown Prince of Nigeria emails you personally asking you to assist in a mutually beneficial business transaction, good times rarely come easy.

“If we’re not in Europe, we’re nothing.”

Do you really think that Bill Nicholson was the type of chap to make pronouncements like this and then mumble afterwards, ‘Err, with some obvious caveats..’ ? No, nor do I.

Yes it’s less money, yes it’s more effort. But any money is good when you’re building for the future and we currently have the largest squad in Western Europe outside of the Cirque du Soleil and the similarities don’t end there…

So let’s embrace this competition and if we’re in it, try to win it. Eh?

The Jam TartsĀ  seem to be looking forward to the game but less so to the probable result. The atmosphere ought to be intense enough, Tynecastle is an old fashioned ground and the fans are right up to the pitch.

And I am given to understand Mr Dave McKay may very well be on the premises …what more motivation can possibly I give you? Bring it on.

So. We have a lump of players who need to be shop windowed/given some game time. Let’s exploit the Europa and quit the groaning.

BIOYC!

    The Daily Gout Report:
Rafa van der Vaart returns but Harry Redknapp has midfield problems ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League play-off, first leg at Hearts.

Last season’s top-scorer Rafa limped out of our pre-season match at Brighton with an ankle injury and missed our final friendly against Athletic Bilbao.

However, he has trained this week and is in the squad for Edinburgh.

Harry cited injuries to Tom Huddlestone, Luka Modric, Jermain Jenas and Wilson Palacios as well as Sandro, who is out longer term.

“Tom’s had a problem with his ankle since the back end of last season,” reported Harry. “Luka has a groin problem, he’s not fit. Jermain Jenas has an Achilles problem, Wilson Palacios won’t be fit for tomorrow and Sandro is out long-term. They are all central midfield players.”

William Gallas (calf) and Ledley King (knee) are also sidelined for the season-opener at Tynecastle.

Astro, without getting all Wenger on your arse, I have always thought you a voice of reason on this excellent, but twisted knicker, site.
I just don’t get people’s inability to accept reality. To whit: we are NOT a big club – the last time we were, large parts of the globe were still pink.We have one of the best managers and squads we can hope for with what we have to offer. We need to cut our coat according to our cloth. I’m not accepting mediocrity, but I do advocate reality. No wonder other supporters despise us.
It seems to me that it’s OK to pour vitriol on the manager/chairman. But if try to be a realist you’re some kind of traitor to the club. I also wonder how many of the most rabidly intolerant posters on this board are CEOs’ of their own multinationals? It’s easy to be critical when you don’t have to take responsibility.

SteveSpur,i was not referring to your post at all, read what i wrote again touchy bollocks

    • LLL says:

But he doesn’t take responsibility, does he? Except for all the good stuff. Everything else he blames on anyone else, the wages, the fans, the chairman, the last manager, the players, anyone except himself.

You won’t win this argument on sympathy. The best line of reasoning I’ve heard put forward is that all the successful managers are total wankers and he is actually not too much of an arsehole in comparison. Which is I suppose as good an argument as I can think of.

In a recent BBC poll of corporate heads all bar one could not find fault with themselves. The exception had the honesty to say he didn’t listen to his staff enough.
I’m not excusing Harry-he can be a prat sometimes. I’m merely saying he is a product of his environment, and no different to his peers.
Maybe you think he should be brutally honest, like Wenger? Or that you would be better?

      • SteveSpur says:

N.B. I think you’ll find it was me who suggested he was no better, or worse, than other managers. Who would you have? Maureen: dream on. Ancellotti: didn’t impress me. Scolari: earning too much money in, “I can’t believeitsnoteuropestan”. Maybe Glennda? He could convince 3mp that the reason he’s crap is because he was too short in a previous life.

Frontwheel, Passion without moderation and consideration = extremism. Harry and Danny are not bad people because they haven’t bought the players you want.I guess – because you spend your days in their offices – you believe they are just sitting around doing jack shit. I could have told the captain of the Titanic to slow down, but I’ve seen the movie. And I wouldn’t have anyway, because I wanted DiCaprio to drown.

  • SteveSpur says:

Frontwheel, my apologies. I thought you were replying to my previous post,(timelapse).
I’m passionate about our team, have been since 67.
I visit this site for intelligent comment and a dash of wit. It seems to me that both are becoming scarce. I misunderstood your post, excuse me.

        OOh, I’m all moist.
Emmanual allgooey has claimed that we wanted to sign him, prior to his move to somewhere east of Blackburn.
Manny, you’re cheque’s in the post, of course I love you, and of course I won’t come in your mouth(my name’s not Wenger). Do you believe me too.

I hate the idea that Modric can sign a contract for 5 years, and then want to break it in order to join his boyhood team. I hate the way that knuckle-dragging cunt at Manyou bent them over regarding his salary(just how dear are pensioners?). But I also remember a time, pre Bosman, when footballers were treated like chattels. It was the same time that unions held the country in sway. Now the wheel has come full circle: unions are toothless, and footballers rule the roost.
Clearly, neither situation is ideal. Labour relations apart, something must be done to curb the power of footballers. “I only have a limited career, so I need twenty million to retire on”, just doesn’t fucking cut it.
City traders refer to their bonuses as 5,10 or 20 times P.M. The P.M. meaning the prime minister’s salary.
Every time that granny fucking moron in red graces the field of play, he is earning more than most people will earn in 5 years. I think Defoe had his licence saved because A: he bought the best brief, and B: he needed to drive to training. I’ve got news for the cunt: hire a chauffeur; it would cost you three days pay.
I remember when my wife was giving birth. The obstetrician held my hopes and fears in his hands. He,according to the situation, could have given, or lost life. He was earning less in one year than Tevez earns in a week. Someone, PLEASE, explain to me why this should be. And before someone cites tennis players, or F1 drivers,or anyone; please consider this. Rooney/Federer, Terry/Coulthard, Barton/Darren Clarke. I know the counterparts all earn obscene amounts, but they do display a certain amount of humility. And yes, I know there are bad boys in all sports, but compared to football?
Some fuckwit suggested that, in the light of last week’s riots, footballers should act as role-models for today’s youth. I would suggest they already do.
We are never going to return to the integrity and loyalty of Bill Nich, Paisley, Perryman or Mackay: the society that created them no longer exists. The only way to proceed is to create a wage structure, and a system of mutual respect that ends this present farce.More importantly, we’re never gonna get a world class striker. Excuse me, I think I just saw Elvis in my garden.

        • frontwheel 2 says:

He can’t be in your garden he’s on the moon in a double decker.I think your arguing with yourself when it comes to footballers wages,i’m sure all will agree with your post, except for the bit about the unions, bring back king Arthur i say

        • LosLorenzo says:

Don’t blame the footballers. It’s the obstetrician who has missed the ticket by not broadcasting his deliveries to a rapt global audience of consumers.

          Lazy…
