A Quick Poll

Good afternoon.

I’m finding the attitude of some Tottingham fans laughable. And that’s as generous as I’m going to get. Tell me, just what is your position on cups these days? I mean do they still hold any appeal at all?

I was recently accused (no really it happened, some boys pointed at me, said something then pegged it)  of being some dreadful type who expected to win every game 5-0. An immediate gratification merchant.

This was in response to the fact that I dared to acknowledge the truth that watching our Yoofsters and second stringers I find [A] largely boring [B]Not very good value for money.

The kids so far have scraped past less than mediocre opposition in the Europa Cup and been a pivotal element in being dumped out of the Carling Cup.

So if we forget about my feeble attention span and ignore my miserly approach to life, tell me this and tell me true. What value do the cups actually  have to you these days?

Here’s the poll.

One final comment on reflection; it all about the quality of the squad, if we have it in depth then rotation and 2-3 kids in these games isn’t an issue.

The problem is we still have two complete wastes of space namely Pav the sleeping Pansey and Gio Dire Santos. Why Levy didn’t take Sevilles money and laugh himself senseless I will never know, but Levy’s eye for the money means that once again we’re left with a player who just isn’t good enough on any level, and before anyone else starts, International football isn’t even close to the intensity of the Premier League and outside of the top three clubs in Spain nor is La liga. He is a poison useless fat dwarf and I pray that come January he’s gone, and of course Pav with him and if we manage to sell Pav and not Gio perhaps we can loan Gio to Pav as his ballboy.

Football has changed because its now a huge money, global game. It became that as a result of Rupert Murdoch. But supporting football teams is all about the unchanging. ‘We’ did the double in 1961 when it was considered an impossibility; and did in style [winning first 11 games] with great footballers. ‘We’ were the first UK club to win a European Trophy, in style. ‘We’, until it all went crazy, were out in front with FA cup wins, won three cups in a row in the early 70s. So the tension is that as a fan you want Spurs to be the team that wins silverware in style, but the stupid money Permiership and its bastard child the CL has devalued all other competitions. Our values don’t change [it’s about winning ALL GAMES in style] but the values of the club we support have been forced to change. Football and football fans are the victims [Everton and Cardiff grounds less than half full for Carling games last night].

The Carling Cup was were we were at the time, we have moved on and our target now is the top 4.

The Europa league is excellent for the squad players and youth players. As is the Carling Cup but I would like to see a full 2nd XI in the FA Cup.

At the moment of course we have plenty of injuries otherwise our teams could be stronger in the Carling and Europa League.

Not concerned in the slightest we have gone out of the CC, more of a concern is Pav not even trying, Gio’s inability to show any ability, Michael Owen didn’t seem to have a problem playing in a weakened team, nor did Ryan Giggs so there is no excuse for the performances of these two in both cups.

Neither did Corluka, Basson, Benny or Kaboul!

By the way you were absolutely right the other day on the Man U v Spurs fixture. The Martin Peters 4-1 demolition of United was1972 much further back than I thought. I was at the January 1971 match at OT when Best scored a ridiculous winner with our defenders not being to see the ball at all. Still there was some good stuff then. I seem to remember a 3-2 win after being 2 goals down.

        • Essexian76 says:

Wasn’t that a 3-3 draw in 86?, I remember that game and we were 2-0 down then 3-2 up, and drew 3-3 Moran scored the equalizer I think?

        • Essexian76 says:

Not that I think about Spurs all the time, but some on here think that because I don’t agree with them, my feelings are half-hearted, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. On the current debate I clearly recall being at a deserted WHL for a LC game in the early rounds possibly 15-17k max in attendance, but what do I know eh?

        • Essexian76 says:

Sorry to hog, but George Best was my hero as was Colin Bell, both players I’ve seen play in various London venues mainly Arsenal and Chelsea, just to watch those guy’s turn out was a pleasure. Even saw Rodney Marsh debut for City at Highbury in 72 because he was our local hero having attended both my Primary and Secondary schools with a certain Alan Sugar no less! both a bit before my time, but legends are just that

        • Boy Charioteer says:

Yes, the 3-3 draw I think Clive Allen figured a prominent past in that one.

        • Boy Charioteer says:

          Part predictive text aaagh

        • Northern Spur says:

Boy Charioteer, as a local lad I was at all three of the games you mention. One of the goals in our 0-2 to 3-2 win came direct from a corner if I remember correctly.

        • Essexian76 says:

Oh, blimey yeah, I remember something like that. Johnny Pratt, Tony Want and John H Stracey were all near neighbours of mine. I was forunate enough to attend Tony Wants 21st as a young starry-eyed lad, with the lasting memory of Gillie on his own with a bottle of brown spirit (Sasperilla, I think), but met that 71-2 side, in awe and spoke about it for ages.

        • Essexian76 says:

Pehaps we should start an ‘All Our Yesterdays’ blog for the more discerning and cerebal amongst us, All text speil banned (which rules most Gooners), and would appeal to only those of a more mature disposition….what say you guy’s?

      • Essexian76 says:

Yeah, He did, but something in my mind recalls a screamer..maybe Roberts, but can’t recall, probably Roberts whacking someone more like, but it was a true classic match either just before or soon after xmas. But the greatest OT game I’ve ever seen was an FA Cup match, when Glenda went in goal, we were down to 10 through no fault of our own, and Ardiles scored in ET to win it, absolutely mental game!

        • Boy Charioteer says:

Yes, it was a replay after a 1-1 draw at WHL which was featured on an old World of Sport re-run on Men and Motors or some obscure satellite channel. Or it could have been 2-2, my memory is failing fast. Retirement will take some getting used to.

      • Essexian76 says:

Nope, you’re right it was a 1-1 draw at the lane, if its the same game I’m sure Terry Gibson made his debut, but we seemed to draw Utd every season, so again I may be confused by a season or two, a season or two before we drew at the lane and lost 2-0 in the reply “Gordon is a moron” we shouted at McQueen; the bastard stuck two fingers up and just smiled.

        • Northern Spur says:

I was also at the replayed cup tie and it has to be one of my most memorable games ever (alongside our 4-2 win against Leeds to stay up in 75?). I was in with the hooligan element of the home fans for this match and in the pre match warm-up the fans around me were giving John Pratt some right stick as he lofted in some practice corners. Pratty took no notice for a while, then he went over and picked up the corner flag and sprayed them with pretend machine-gun fire for a good 10 seconds or so. He’d be on a charge these days.

        • Essexian76 says:

And that game against Leeds was fantastic, remember Alfie Conn, what a dude. Saw him score a hat-trick against Newcastle away on debut I think, stuffed them 5-2 and we were shit at the time!

  • Sid Trotter says:

I think that in all these debates we forget the importance that butter brings to the argument

We need young people to play football, so we can tell our children we were that good/bad

  • nobby nobbs says:

Going further in Cups with youngsters/second string is good for keeping them motivated. Maybe Allen or Sherwood should take the Uefa Cup squad. It is all about Top 4 but I hope we put some serious effort into the FA Cup.
