What’s With The VdV Hate?

Guten tag,

Yesterday the news filtered out that Raphael Van der Vaart had been fast tracked on the old mendy mendy by Marjoe Von Toorn.

Now, not just on here but across the Internet there was resounding response somewhere between ‘so what?’ and ‘so what’s the good news?’

I won’t say I was shocked, sometimes even the most devoutly intelligent football fans get ‘footballed out’ and after another messiah free transfer window and an Interlull, it was always possible this news might get a somewhat muted response.

But has the shine really gone off the flying Dutchman that much?  He irritated the hell out of me in the Yanited game, but I put that down to Arry telling him he had a choice, he could hoof it to Pete or go for gold against the Manc man child.

Van der Vaart was a revelation last season. He was bloody excellent in the main, passing, scoring and kissing little old ladies on the nut like nobody’s business.

Now he seems to be viewed by a good many as a liability. Can any one explain why we don’t need him anymore?

    It’s not hate.

Redknapp has no idea how to use him and basically tells him to do as he pleases; VdV has said as much himself. The result is that he ends up running around like a Dutch ‘pointy’ on Duracell until his legs pack up.

Needs to be deployed with more nous.

Now we have (hopefully) someone who can hold the ball up, he won’t have to spend so much time running around aimlessly.

If it’s a case of Defoe, Pav or VdV to play with/behind the loan striker, then I’d choose VdV every time. The other two are mid-table chancers.

      What is a Dutch ‘pointy’?

      • Me says:

“Pointy” is the name given by Spurs fans to Robbie Keane for his fondness of running round pointing!

      • Dublin Spur says:

Dutch pointy is a reference to Robbie Keane as Pointy Shouty Bloke.

To get back to the point here I’m curious to see how we play without him. He has no defined role and that seems to confuse the team. He’s not really a midfielder, not really a striker, not a winger. he is though a very skillful player. He’s always likely to score but the other strikers don’t when he’s around. Maybe Ade will change that.
Harry’s lack of nouse as to how to use him is the issue really.

VdV should be playing between the opposition’s defence and midfield, but if we insist on playing with two out and out wingers, it makes it difficult to get numbers into the box to support.

Regardless of who came in the window or who was kicked out of it, the formation and patterns of play should have been tested during the closed season games.

As far as I could see, it was the same old predictable play.

      • Bobbles says:

Ah yes, he is a a bit PSB!

And there was me thinking it was a clever reference to the sort of helmets Dutch soldiers used to wear in the middle ages…

Personally I’m getting really pissed off with many of these so called ‘fans’ of our club. A little bit of sarcasm’s fine by me, but much of this stems from pure jealousy and spite. If it’s not VDV then it’ll Defoe et-al, but the root of it is nothing but spite. What exactly did VDV do to warrant such a reaction, well he stormed off and kicked a ball. Probably out of frustration at an old injury rearing it’s head again, maybe at the prospect of being out long term, who knows? But at the slightest hint of a problem, they swoop from out of the gutter, and you can read them, plenty of them on any site you care to mention. Well it’s given Levy a rest for now, and Defoe has until Saturday to take a break ” Supporters!” My arse!

    • Bobbles says:

Agree 100%. The cure is to take a break from reading the internet every now and again.

The way some of our ‘fans’ drone on you’d think we were Champions in waiting, rather than a club who have been peddling mid-table mediocrity for most of the last 20 years, yet are now, slowly but surely, getting their act together.

It’s the same with all this “Harry is a clown” business. Really? We’ve had 3 pretty decent seasons if you ask me. Who would you rather have, Moyes? Jog on.

Get behind the team and stop fucking moaning. We have a collection of outstanding players and we’re not about to sign Messi. Deal with it.

It’s almost like those petulant children who throw their Christmas presents back at their mum because it’s the the latest gizmo, but also forgetting how hard she’d scrimped and saved for it. Perhaps being able to stand your corner and laugh when you’ve been walloped 7-1 at Newcastle may bring home a few true facts about where we are now to where we were then, that’s support!

    • Plod says:

VDV cares and is one who shows passion and sometimes frustration when things don’t go right.

Brilliant acquisition for the club, the sooner he is back the better, he linked with Crouch and I look forward to him scoring even more when linking with Adebayor.

Spot on. Tinternet blogging ain’t wot it should… fellow fans, indeed, lol. It’s like spending the day at the empty crates. I’s expecting more love.

  • chop the deadwood says:

We do need him, he is our most creative and best player. What we need is to play him behind 1 striker 4 in midfield (Bale, Lennon, Modric and Sandro)or we need to play 3 at the back 5 in the middle and 2 up front with VDV in the middle of the 5 pulling the strings.

Anyone who slates VDV is a clown

  • Mr_Spiggott says:

I’m trying to be upbeat. The frustration is born out of the fact our season hasn’t yet started.

A moment of joy against the jocks followed by the reality check.

We’ve played the top 2 teams in the league.

Then….a less than enthralling transfer window…..then an international break.

I’m not gonna focus my frustrations on one player but we do need a win…then another one….then another one…

My smile fades however with an impending sense of doom – I have a vision of Bale laying on the floor screaming in agony. :cwy:

We don’t need to batter wolves – win ugly if needs be – get points.

Then frustrate Liverpool and nick a goal.

In a months time I’ll reconsider the need to panic.

What I and many others have said is that HR has struggled to find a system that accomodates him other than the aforementioned hoof it to 3MP and hope for a knock down. He doesn’t fit in a trad Spurs 4-4-2 because he doesn’t work hard enough when we don’t have the ball and we get overrun in midfield. And yes he lacks pace which is a problem in English football that he doesn’t have in Europe or the international arena. Like nobby I too also wonder if he has ever been fully fit – he fades out of games alarmingly at the 75 minute mark and seems unable to string four or five games together without another injury. Does this make me a VDV hater? Far from it, he is a superb footballer, but are we getting the most from him?
