No Like Second Hand Fridge

Good morning. And hear me out.

The Daily SiegHeil is running with the tale that Fernando Torres ‘the artiste formerly known as Liverpool’s number nine’ could be an affordably priced casualty of the AVB revolution at Second Hand Fridge.

I say we ship him in. The old phrase, ‘form is temporary but class is permanent‘ is actually cobblers. What people crave is consistency. Let’s face it, how many players have we had in recent years who wrote us endless IOU’s but failed to deliver?

My theory in relation to Torres’ career going toilet-wards is simple. The players didn’t want him. If ever there was a club with a clique it is Chelsea. Drogba had the most to lose watching a few of their games together, Drog’s contempt was thinly veiled. Defoe’s passing in the 18 yard box is more generous.

So if he was transplanted into a side that actually wanted him, he’d do the business. Repeated hamstrings  and strains have probably taken some edge off him from when at his very very best, but he’s looked as fit as a butcher’s dog  from what I’ve seen of him.

And what would make any deal all the sweeter of course, is doing this after upgrading Modric’s contract.

Chelsea would not sell to us, Torres is past his best, wages too high. Tevez is trouble, works hard for team but two months in and he`d be back in tina for an extended holiday, wages too high. Pay the going rate for Llorente (£25m) and 80k per week instead of p*ssing around with rejects, but are we really serious about the next level or just happy to be contenders ?

  • Bruxie says:

    I’m split on this one.

Torres at £20m would be a good buy.
Tevez at £20m would be a good buy.

Both would still command that fee (or more) in a year or two.

    But team spirit is paramount.

So, if we have that amount of money to throw around in order to guarantee a CL spot or better, then why are we considering these two?

We would show our ambition to our own players and we send a message to others that we want top spot.

Torres is not the worker we need. But Tevez would be.

If we could afford one – I’d take Tevez and sell him on after the season finishes. Even his agent/owner will want him on best behaviour for a spell so that another payday comes around. He could do a job for us for six months and bog off to Spain/Italy/Argentina/Brazil at no loss to us (perhaps even a profit) – having proved his worth in getting us up the PL and into the CL.

Part of the sell on to Citeh to compensate for the smaller fee – provided we make the CL.

Could be good business for all.

Torres – we don’t need him. Doesn’t work hard enough and is a risk. And Chelscum won’t sell to us.

Paradoxically, he is still a good buy at £20m and will retain his value.

Tevez as a hired gun for the rest of the season, please.

    • TMWNN says:

I was amazed that City not only lent us Adebayor, but actually agreed to pay more than half of his ridiculous wages. There’s no way they would do the same again now we’re not that far off them.

      • Bruxie says:

        Yes, they would.

With a lump sum fee and sell-on clause to get him off the payroll, they would probably recoup most of their £30m outlay.

We’d lose £10m or so – but probably get CL qualification. If we didn’t – no sell-on payment.

Citeh are not going to get that kind of money anywhere else. The top teams in Europe will qualify for CL regardless of Tevez.

        • TMWNN says:

One of your rivals is 4 points behind (if they win their game in hand), would you let them have one of the best players in the game?

        • jim says:

Bruxie i’m not sure we would be able to sell him after 6 months. Somewhere in the back of my head i seem to think we would have to own the player for a year. But your logic is sound. A sort of Broker arrangement.

        • Bruxie says:

If the rivals were the only bidders – yep.

          They need to sell.

Jim – I take your point that a player cannot join three clubs in one season. But he wouldn’t be doing that if he joined on six month agreement in January.

      • UnkleKev says:

There’s a very real possibility that with Adebayor’s help we could pip City to the title. With Tevez on board as well I’d actually make us favourites.

For this reason alone there is no way he’ll be making the jouney south come January.

        • Bruxie says:

I don’t think we would be favourites.

We’d be good for second. Especially with Vidic & Fletcher out.

Citeh need to sell in this window. Not to do so will effect their FFP status. If we are the bidder with the most attractive package for Tevez – and he refuses to move elsewhere – then we are in pole position.

We are an attractive short term solution for him. Close to Heathrow, London and upwardly mobile in the league.

Why not? Citeh just want rid. They’ll take a risk.

        • UnkleKev says:

Our midfield is at least as good as, if not better than, City’s. Our defence is comfortably better than City’s. Add Tevez to our strikeforce and I’d say we’d be better off up front as well. Hart’s the better keeper, but Friedel’s more than capable of doing what’s required. Which is why I would make us favourites if we could acquire Tevez.

Plus, Yaya Toure is off to the African Nations Cup in January and could miss five league games. If they were to lose Silva for any reason at all during that time it could well cost them the title as those two are the heartbeat of the team.

It could be business suicide for them to let Tevez come to us which is exactly why they won’t take the risk.

  • jim says:

I wonder if in any way Tevez could be linked with signing Ade. Man city are desperate to reduce their budget deficit because of the new uefa financial rules. And the wages they are paying are a huge part of that problem. Its all very interesting!

    • Frontwheel 2 says:

I was talking to an old neighbour in London a month ago who rates himself as a bit of an ITK and he told me we would have Tevez by the new year and it was Tevez who was keen to come,I naturally smiled and thought he was talking out of his arse, but who knows?

      • jim says:

Hes got to get away from MC that’s a definite. I hope he was right Frontwheel cause no matter what the boy is world class.(As long as he doesn’t bring any attitude)

  • Colonel Moriarty says:

Tevez without attitude just isn`t Tevez, it`s in his DNA, anyway it`s ridiculous he won`t be coming here, stop believing the utter crap. We need a striker and CB of world class who fits the Tottenham mould and wage structure.

    • Bruxie says:

Like Defoe. Like Zamora. Like Pav?

You won’t get world class on our wage structure. We need to break it temporarily.

      • Colonel Moriarty says:

There are plenty of good strikers available throughout Europe around the 25-30m mark well within our wage structure and CL bonus scheme. Some people can`t see further than the EPL.

        • Bruxie says:

Not as good as Tevez. And not as hard working as Ade.

Llorente may get goals in Spain. He’s untested in the PL and another sluggish striker.

        • Bruxie says:

The whole point of this particular blog, Colonel, is to comment on Spurs ability to pick up a striker who will take us up a level.

          Not merely to replace Pav.

Spend big on the correct world class player in this window and we will take a very big step to cementing our place in PL & CL contention.

Carry on spending on untried & tested players from “throughout Europe” will not deliver that promise.

We have to go for it this year. Modric, Bale and VDV & (why don’t I mention the whole 1st team squad) want to see ambition. We have to show our intentions to compete.

Let’s go for him and get him like we did Klinnsman!

        • Colonel Moriarty says:

Agree with most of your last post as it echoes my previous, had we bought Llorente last Jan we would be playing CL now, to miss out again is unforgiveable, check out Llorente Goals on u-tube and stop fantacising.

        • Bruxie says:

I could certainly teach you the meaning of the word “patronising” if you wish?

          Stick that in a poem.

We’ll have to wait and see. But I hope we show more ambition than you.

          Bye

      • Colonel Moriarty says:

Messi is untested in the Premier League so he must be crap also, what perfect reasoning. Llorente is far superior in leading the line, hold up play, great with the ball at his feet in close quarters and great in the air, you`ve been reading too many football comics Bruxie.

        • Colonel Moriarty says:

You`re confused lad, you said Llorente may get goals in Spain but was untested in the PL and was sluggish, my point is relevant, please try to keep up. The only thing that`s silly is your view that Tevez could even be allowed to join the Glory Boys.

        • Bruxie says:

          Now you are being silly.

Messi would not go for £20m. Tevez quite possibly would.

      • essexian76 says:

How can you temporarily break a wage structure? surely you either break it or you don’t! Once it’s broken and a precedent is set, it’s gone for ever and there’s a very long queue forming outside Levy’s door headed by Redders.Wh-hhhay-mediocrity and Carey Street beckons!

  • Colonel Moriarty says:

BTW Player ratings spot on old chap, couldn`t agree more but don`t ever want to see those figures again this term.

Now we`re fourth, the Cheats nipped in,
We`re dazed, some say our heads in a spin,
But we`ll come back at the cats in the Lane,
And move up the table to 3rd spot again.

This team is creative, our chances are plenty,
But to make it work out, we need Llorente,
So you guys must forget about Fernando and Carlos,
In eight days time we`ll show Chelsea who`s Boss.
