Good afternoon.

Ryan ‘Half’ Nelson then. 34 years of age and the burning question of the day has to be, ‘ eh? ‘ Easy I guess to knock him. Let’s face it, many of us didn’t see PNB working, but this strikes me as ambitious beyond belief.

Bassong on loan I get. He’s worth pursuing to see if his potential can ‘unlocked’. That makes sense. But to replace him with an injury prone gentleman… don’t we already have those spots covered?

I managed to find this radio interview with 3News.co.nz Which you can hear HERE

The MO at Blackburn sees Nelson as a has been according to Kean,We were after Samba but had to settle for Nelson,

  • david says:

We spent nothing on transfer fees this window and I wonder if that is because we don’t have the money to spend ( new stadium etc ) or because by the middle of next week, Levy thinks he will be looking for a new manager.

    • PeterTheStoreyTeller says:

Whats ado with Harry is not helping Spurs image.

      @jfdit

“hope selling crazing paving doesn’t backfire on us”

Not you personally, but this is definitely a wake up call for those who wanted rid of Pav. Be careful what you wish for springs to mind.

As for Saha, I have a feeling he will do well for us.

    • SpurredoninDublin says:

      @David

There was no real big spending by anybody in the last window. I don’t think you can read anything into that. We did offer £18 mill for Remy, but nobody was selling their stars.

      • david says:

Not sure I believe the offer was made but if it was, was it before or after the player had already said he had no intention of moving in this window ?
To be honest, if I am Levy and thinking I may need a new manager next week, I am not convinced I would have splashed the cash in this window.
We need to hope we are lucky with injuries and suspensions over the next 4 months.

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

The offer was leaked by the Frogs. If you are trying to suggest that DL made an offer for a player that he knew was unavailable, that does take some believing. Besides which, footballers are not renowned for their honesty, or for refusing to change their minds after they received an offer.

If the whole idea is to put in “phoney bids” to con the supporters into thinking they are doing something special, there were other much higher profile players they could have latched onto.

        • david says:

Perhaps I am being too cynical.
The truth is, none of us really know what is going on but there is a lot of spin by the clubs, players and agents.
Anyway, we are where we are and I am quite looking forward to seeing if Saha can make a difference.
He has got to be a better bet than Henry, who is supposed to be on £150,000 a week which must make him the Worlds most expensive cheer leader.

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

When I read something, my view is “why would they lie”. I can’t see why the French would on this occasion, though if it had been the player, I might have been more sceptical.

Regarding Henry, see my post @10.12. That should cheer you up.

        • Essexian76 says:

All joking aside, it was a terrible window but I’ve a feeling that it’s as much to do with consolidation and clearing the decks, than one of pushing for players that were unattainable. If Blackburn said no deal over Samba for example, why then go for an inferior player at double the price? Equally, if we’ve set our stall out for Leandro, why then just get A N Other in on a long term, expensive deal and snooker ourselves for any summer transfers? Sort of makes sense, cheers ( tops up glass…again)

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

I recall the window last Jan, and the number of posters who were cursing DL for not having bought, Torres/Suarez/Carrol or any combination of these.

This time around, when you look at the window and see that Pav was one of the biggest names to move, it is difficult to curse anybody.

I think we are beginning to see some realism coming into the game. The money is from the top down, and when teams like Manure/Shitty/Cheatski are no longer buying £40 mill plus players because of FFPR, it trickles down all the way to the bottom.

I always felt that the reason Cheatski only offered £22 mill for Lucre at the beginning, was that they were told that it doesn’t matter how much the Russki has, if he wants to win the CL, he has to be in the comp first, and FFPR was to be taken seriously or he couldn’t compete.

Similarly, with Mansour, Mancini is telling him the squad isn’t strong enough, but if he goes out and spends another £50 mill, he wont qualify for the CL.

Not having access to the figures, my guess is that in order to make a profit, they will have to take drastic action unless they can win four trophies a season. I think they usually have about 4,000 empty seats per game. Assuming the increased their prices by £20 per seat, and played to full houses for 25 games a year, that increases income by £30 mill, but they lost £194 mill last year, and we all know that you won’t find many takers for an extra £20 per match.

Both Cheatski and Shitty appear to have “shot their bolt” financially. Arse look like they are not going to be in the CL next season. Same for the scousers for the third year running.

If my guess is correct, we only need to qualify for the CL for the next couple of seasons until the NDP is finished and we could be semi-permanent fixtures there for years to come. All thanks to FFPR.

    • Essexian76 says:

I don’t think we have the money as it was rumoured Krasic wanted a perm deal and we just couldn’t afford it,which makes you wonder even if we qualify for the CL whether we can afford to hold on to Bale Modric or either of them?

      • SpurredoninDublin says:

If the worst comes to the worst, they are both under contract for several years. Then again, I haven’t heard Bale say that he wants to leave, and if you agree with my last post, you will see that there are very few teams in the world who could afford to buy Modric without letting decent players go.

I meant to add to my last post that if Shitty were to add £20 to a ticket, the £30 mill this might raise pays the wages of three £200k a week players. I don’t see that the Shitty model is sustainable.

      • SpurredoninDublin says:

I understand (but may be wrong), that we wanted the loan to assess whether to make him a permanent offer.

        • Essexian76 says:

Harry is quoted clearly as saying we couldn’t afford him..whether that was his wages or the fee wasn’t clear, and then again it’s possible Harry’s not overly convinced about him and used the “We’re skint’ line as an out and or to send a signal out to others that we’re not prepared to pay silly money for anyone?

        • Essexian76 says:

My major concern to Fair play, is simply that I cannot see Barca,Real or the top Italian’s being booted out of the CL for any transgression of the rules. I trust UEFA as much as I do FIFA, but if it were an English club that flouted the rules-they’d be out like a shot!

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

Not sure why you are so suspicious, but I think Uefa needs the English Clubs more than anybody country.

If you travel around East Asia on a CL night, the games that are being advertised in the bars, are the PL teams games. The sponsors money depends on TV audiences, and once you start clamping down on PL teams, so that (e.g.) Stoke finish eighth and qualify because of FFPR, the TV audiences will shrink drastically. If you think that UEFA will show favouritism, it is more likely to be to keep the Sky 4 (the brand leaders) in situ at the expense of teams with smaller followings.

It’s not just the CL that attracts the audiences world wide. At weekends, most of the sportsbars are capable of showing games from all the major Euro leagues, but the majority of games being advertised are PL. I have been in bars with five different screens, and a different PL game on each of them.

If there is a conspiracy, it will be to keep all the crowd pullers in, and not to clamp down on the English only because once the English are out of the comp, the viewing audiences go down.

If I send a jar of Vaseline to the Lane, with for ‘Arry’s holiday marked on it will he get it in time

  • TMWNN says:

It’s a shame some of the more able targets weren’t brought in. Would have given the whole club a shot in the arm, and sent out the signal that we’re going for the title.

Saha and Nelson are cheap plasters; sending out the message that a CL place will do.

Saying that, a fit Saha will offer more than the midget. After all, unlike Spurs, Everton players have hardly been queuing up to blaze over.

  • LosLorenzo says:

His name is NelsEn. Not Nelson.
