Sell Modric This Afternoon

Good morning.

In my inimitable wisdom I’ve decided we should flog Modric this afternoon.

The suggestion is that Levy & Co are perfectly within their rights to ask for £40M for him as he still has yards and yards of legally binding contract left to run.

And there’s the nub of it. Footballer contracts aren’t worth the laughing gas that was being liberally consumed while they were being drafted. They’re a handshake, a mother asking a child, ‘please don’t’, a whim, a fancy …a hope. If Levy & Co are on a crusade to enforce their rights in law then that way madness lies. Crusades are expensive and require you to unplug your brain for their duration.

The guy wants out. He’s not not very bright without a ball at his feet, but he knows what he wants. He signed a lengthy contract and then announced about a fortnight later that there was a gentleman’s agreement separate to it in existence that would allow the contract to be null and void. The caliber of work one would might expect from a 6 year old negotiating for sweets twenty minutes before dinner is served.

Then it appears he hadn’t fallen in love with Roman Abramovich’s money, it was more ‘money in general’ and so if Los Blancos coins stood up to the ancient Croatian tradition of a rat bite then they would be as equally welcome.

He is never going to play his very very best for us again. You do know that, don’t you? I mean I’m not typing this out only to have it read by some long term unemployed tea bag commercial chimpanzees am I?

He was ‘alright’ last season, but he didn’t score enough goals and he didn’t look anywhere near like he was worth £30M , let alone £40m. We won’t sell to him to competitors and as Mysterious Stranger pointed out yesterday that achieves one thing. You decrease the size of the marketplace and you decrease the value of the product. You ever been to an auction? There’s a golden rule. ‘All you need are two people in the room that really want it. If you’ve three, then Happy Christmas.’

We have Real Madrid and nobody else.

The notion to ‘throw him into the reserves and let him rot’ is all very admirable, but we’re back into crusade territory. Not even the RSPCA are going to show any interest in him if you do that. You’re effectively setting fire to £30M quid in your back garden out of spite.

Now none of us truly know what the deal with any of these striker negotiations are. That’s not up for debate. Unless of course the chairman is reading. In which instance, be a love and please use the comments box below.

But what we can guess with some degree of accuracy is that money is large element in the equation. We need to cut our losses and quickly. Preferably before teatime.

    Stick him on eBay.

RM have always had the upper hand on this one, ultimately Levy will have to fold, as retaining the Croat’s services for the coming season is also akin to setting fire to £30m thanks to ‘Webster’.

Don’t forget to factor in the long term damage done to us in future transfers. Say a lost £30m for Bale, £10m lost from Walker, £5m from Kaboul etc etc
It’s about more than just the Modric deal it’s about what happens in the future, Levy’s seen what happened with Berba and in my mind he’s learnt. I’m sure if you asked him he doesn’t want to leave it to the last min, but Real are banking on him panicking and selling quickly. Not going to happen

Bale wont be here next year anyways if we dont make Champion’s League. Apparently he didn’t really sign a new contract, it was an automatic clause activated by Spurs finishing fourth. Either way he is pacing himself and developing himself at Spurs. Moment he thinks he is close to being a finished article he’s gone to whichever great team is ruling the roost.

Berbatov was different, as Spurs would not have fallen foul of the Webster Ruling had he remained; we held the upper hand.

With Modric we have to do business in this window, or risk losing 10s of millions; we can only take RM to the wire if there is (or we can convince RM there is) another interested party willing to pay.

Sell him now and then get 2 strikers in before the first game ffs.
I dont know which is more annoying – the fact we haven’t yet got rid of Modric or the fact we still don’t have a strikeforce to play in under 2 weeks time!

I know a thing or two about crusades and the collateral damage they create is rarely worth the cause. If they wanted him that bad they would stomp up the £40 million, they just “would like him” and if not they have other targets. Take the money and run Dan while it’s on offer, even with out rat boy we have one of the best midfields out there. What we need is a top notch striker.

    • Habib says:

Without ratboy our midfield goes below Cabaye Tiote Ben Arfa et al – Love him or hate him he is the most creative midfielder in the League.

Ginge is right, if he didnt want to stay, he simply should not have signed.

Its like taking a tracker mortgage out at the bank with the mortgage person from the bank saying everything will be alright in terms of small payments but then the rate rises. Bad advice with a lack of brain (on your part) = equals disaster and that is exactly what has happened here.

Modric through bad advice and lack of a brain should not have signed the extension to his contract, however, they wanted a pay rise and the terms were from Levy to Modric’s camp, have a pay rise but sign an extention.

Business is business and Levy through being an astute businessman and experience knew that once he signed, if he wanted to leave, THFC were covered … unhappy player maybe but rolling over on player demands would be the worst thing to do.

The reality is that not much business is actually being done, Man City havent even spent yet, so you can see that the market is quiet and we hold the golden ticket, its that simple.

    • 50 Shades of Lilywhite says:

Bob, we may hold the golden ticket but it is of no use unless we cash it in. It will be too late too soon and we will not have the firepower that we so desperately need. We have a decent set of fixtures to start with but without a decent striker (Ade/Damiao) we won’t get the returns that should reasonably be expected.

    • Ginge1 says:

Bale wants out Barca will only offer £10m, quick lets sell him cos he now wants to go!
FFS I thank god (the one who I don’t believe in) that you lot aren’t running our club are you sure some of you aren’t Alan Suger or David Sullivan in disguise?
