They Turned Down Modric

Let’s try again now the server is supposedly fixed, shall we?

This was bizarrely revealed on Talksport yesterday afternoon and so my binge cleaning of the kitchen wasn’t all about the one euro and seven pence behind the fridge.

Modders was being scouted, amongst others by a chap by the name of Les Padfield. Les is a professional football scout and he was good stuff, chatting away about his life in football. He was plugging his book – Scouting For Moyes – when he made reference to the Modders snub.

It apparently came from Bolton after the Croatian had played against England. Les said, ‘I told them he had bossed it out there.’ The response was, ‘He’s not big enough.’

Modders is growing in confidence and stature (not height) and is back to where he was just before his leg was broken by the thugs we are playing this weekend. As he’s gettting back to his best he’s again starting to look so reminiscent of Ardiles; the equaliser on Saturday was pure Ossie.

It’s interesting to see the long term effects of reductions in core fitness. I liken this to the two sharpnesses of a knife, there’s the sharpening and the honing. I’m thinking that players like Gallas, DVD and maybe a few others who went to the World Cup, like Palacios & Defoe for example, seem to have been below their core fitness without which, the edge (honing) is missing from their game. As it returns to each individual their game perks up and the edge comes back.

Its not just us either, the top teams who provide the large majority of players to the International sides, have also performed below expectation with the key Internationals not playing at their best, thus we have mid/low table teams up in 6th – 12th spots and all the top 5 dropping daft points.

Just a theory, but fitness has been raised before (yeah by me………….. but by others as well!); I’m sure DAVSPURS would have answers.

A lot of high profile players have been injured since the world cup. That extra energy exerted out there pushed them over the top. Especially the older players and the ones under stress. Terry, rooney, lampard, carragher, gerrard, torres… Just to name a few that I can think of…
