Blinded By Beckham

Having just finished listening to Arry on the radio and two things strike me. One is that I’m amazed I don’t have a buy a new radio today. Two, is I’m becomingly increasingly worried about our glorious manager.

This Beckham thing seems to have become a fixation. We have bigger fish to fry. Yes Beckham would be a ‘triffic’ addition but it terrifies me that somehow the dismal efforts to bring in the right man/men last month are somehow now being traded off against landing Sir David. In November. That’s jam tomorrow, territory.

When it comes to goals most fans prescribe to the old maxim, ‘a goal is a goal’. Many Tottingham fans (notably in the thick of the Stratford debate) prefer football played the Spurs way. Some wit, some guile , perhaps a dash of flash. Is Redschnapps cooing about Becks relentlessly planting the ball on 3MP’s bonce really what we’re after?

Arry has worked wonders. But are we going to end up being a slick Watford?

I know thats NOT what I’m after. Teams which play like that usually end up having to fight a relegation battle sooner rather than later. If we choose that route we will also soon be down there.

    Just like Portsmouth.

I hope Harry gets the England job soon.

The ‘Harry’s going to destroy us’ Portsmouth thing again?

      *Yawn*

I thought we covered that last season when y’all kept saying we’d never make the CL and Harry was ruining the club? That when we needed to beat L’Arse & Chelski we’d bottle it etc. etc.

Anyway, where has this ‘we only lump it long’ thing come from? I distinctly saw us play some good football to feet the other day IN SPITE of an aerial barrage from Blackburn. VDV linked up well to try and fill the gap left by Modders and Lennon would have had a goal & and assist on another day by running at defenders coming in off the wings. Hardly a hoof up to Ray Harford is it?

Whilst I think the whole pursuit of Beckham was misguided, I cannot say I am at all worried by our manager.

No one can argue – though I’m sure they will try – he hasn’t improved the club. It comes down to results. We finished last year higher than we have done since ’93 (by my reckoning) and we are ploughing through Europe, all with a panache Errol Flynn would have envied. Added to this he clearly has a good relationship with the chairman, the Van Der Vaart acquisition being a good example.

Yes he can be a bit over open at times, and yes he can revert to Crouch too early but goals like the VdV double at villa exhibit the finer side of our character. NO team ever plays total football all the time.

In the end if he does take the England job which would be no less than he deserves as an English manager possessing the none too often twinned powers of football nouse and media management, he should be thanked for his service because he will leave a club that is a mouth watering prospect for any manager in Europe. A club with a nigh on top draw team, a huge fanbase, a new stadium and a new dawn ahead of it and the chance to build history.

Given the state of our injury list and the fact three quarters of our first choice creative midfielders are injured, I am happy to get three points per game regardless of how we play.
Winning is all that matters at the moment; we can play the pretty passing game when Bale, Modders and Hudd are gout free.

How lovely a prospect as well… Still 5th, on the coat-tails of 4th and all the top brass yet to be on the pitch at the same time together.

      Bugler! Prepare the charge!!!!! :daumen:

Right around the beginning of the season I believe I posted my outlook for the coming campaign (any HH readers with OCD, feel free to find it for us).

I think the crux of it was “only injuries will keep us out of the top 4.” We haven’t exactly been very fortunate on that front so far. I’m going to stand by that principle, and refine my prediction.

If we for the rest of the season manage to field on average three out of Luka, VdV, Bale and Thudd in front of a defence with a little bit of continuity; we will finish top 4.

Just realized it might be hard to find the post. The site was on a server made of a different sort of cheese baack then.

        • toddspur says:

          we really are missing Thudd…badly.

oh and HH is quite touchy on his cheese….you’ve been warned ;-)
