Player Ratings, That Sort Of Thing

Watching that little lot and trying to remain optimistic rapidly became akin to poking one’s way through squirrel poo and getting happy when finding an undigested nut.

My personal thanks to Clive Allen for showing Jermain Defoe that Greavsie video. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe he learned from watching it or maybe someone whispered in his ear ‘They’re taking the mick, bruv. If I were you, I’d make sure you put one in this time or you could find yourself loaned out to West Ham.’

Watching it on the telly I actually asked ‘er indoors if this was the actual game or a re-run of a 1970’s match. The pitch looked like something you’d hesitate to run a half decent nag out on. It was only the haircuts that gave it away.

Here’s my ratings.

Gomes -4 – Easy to chuck him a ‘4’ and mock the flapping, but there isn’t one goalie in the history of goalie-ing that has had a good run with a conveyor belt of makeshift players in front of him.

Begbie0 – I’ve an allergy to stupid people.

Gallas- 5 – Bogged down in the mud.

Dawson- 5.1 – Last seen as a charm on Doyle’s man bracelet.

A&E4.8 – Another sluggish contributor.

Peanut – 5.3 – I’m terrified by him. Too slow. Too not good enough.

Sandro – 7.89 – Proof that mud needn’t stop play if you have class.

Modders 6 – He didn’t click into gear, at all, much. Really.

Jenas5 – Stop falling over you schmuck. Stop it. Just stop. Now.

Pav6 –  Fab goal, afforded few opportunities to do more.

Defoe8 – Rock & Roll baby.

Lennon – 6.1 – Looked okay. Very okay on occasion. We need more!

Bale 6.3 – Oh how we miss you .

Krankie5.9 – Decent bloke, I fear we’ll lose him in August.

  • Thought modders was actually quite bloody marvellous actually H. The only player in the first 20 mins who even tried to run on that quagmire. More worried bout losing him than bale.

Wednesday will be the polar opposite of a match. 36 thousand screaming yids, a pitch we will be able to pass on ( which we can ignore by trying to plant the ball on crouchies head), bale, Lennon and rafa maurading again.

    I can’t bloody wait! COYS!

fuckwit. 0 for 13. No one is bigger than the club.

    • was always going to happen…. He is right in that it is exactly the same situation as before when PSB and the rat faced bulgarian kept him out the side.

There is a revealing dig at Arry there too – the bit about “I dont need an arm around the shoulder” That is what Arry does, so if he does not like that its goodnight camper….

It burned my gut to watch the Chavs dealing with the Seasiders with professional ease today. Few sparks or imagination, just a steady piece of getting the job done, especially at the back. It’s what would have been our story were Ledders and Woodie regulars, with Daws and Bassong spelling them (while hopefully picking up their skills, though I am beginning to wonder). In the event, our performance was just about the reverse- quite a few nice movements, oohs and aahs in front of their goal, and a shambles in front of ours. Lacking in determination, in preparation, and in competence.

So, yes, MysteriousS, I concur. Plus, there is the sobering fact that were it not for Krankie’s recent heroics, we would be four points worse in the standings. What is ‘Arry thinking about? Trying to paste over the fact that he’s made a poor choice, and letting his ego get in the way of the correct team selection? What is Joe Jordan doing?

The lads wil do us credit on Wednesday. That’s not the issue. The real question is (the frightening one) whether that old devil called “the past” is proving correct, i.e. whether time has caught up with ‘Arry, whether he has reached the limit of what he can do for the club, as a reading of his record might indicate.

Not that I’ve given up on ‘Arry. Yet. Just that I am still venting after today’s game.
    game…

Got to agree with a lot of that TonySpursano, and not just the left flank: bear in mind that we have just put bounty of Modders at 50mill and Bale at 100mill and right now DVD would be somewhere between the two! That we have Pienaar, Kranc, Lennon, Palacios and an emerging Sandro to choose from, plus Huddlestone in the wings and JJ as a last resort: we arguably have the best midfield selection anywhere in the world, certainly the best attacking midfield selecton.

We all know the problems we have up front and 500 posts will not change the lack of capability to put a ball between just two. However, the profligacy in front of goal is hiding the other obvious truth; that successful, consistent top 4 teams do not ship 2-3 each outing hoping to win 4-3 or 3-2!

Yes we need a forward who can pass a ball past another player within the margins of one goal post and the other, but we also need a defensive leader. Daws may get there but not yet, Gallas is there but only as a patch on the hole till we can get the real thing. Frankly our hearts rule our heads and we should have made the tough choice a year ago, to let Ledders and Wooders go and get a defensive team leader.

Clearly Gallas not playing where he should have was a mistake, hey no-one’s perfect not even our ‘arry, but we will need to look longer term. If we can stop shipping so many, we can rely on Pav to pop in a deflection or rely on our midfield to get the points, but we are exacerbating the problem if we require our midfield to get 2 or 3 a game when 1 goal should do.

Short term we must keep Daws and Gallas together meanwhile we need a defensive giant and I am starting to believe we need that more than we need a forward!”

Sorry to quote myaself’ but I posted this a couple of weeks ago and I think its truer than ever now. Even when we score three we are still shipping water at a faster rate that we can Bale (pardon the pun).

Add an ‘l’ and remove a ‘game.’ Getting rusty in the proof reading apparatus.
