Player Ratings, That Sort Of Thing

Watching that little lot and trying to remain optimistic rapidly became akin to poking one’s way through squirrel poo and getting happy when finding an undigested nut.

My personal thanks to Clive Allen for showing Jermain Defoe that Greavsie video. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe he learned from watching it or maybe someone whispered in his ear ‘They’re taking the mick, bruv. If I were you, I’d make sure you put one in this time or you could find yourself loaned out to West Ham.’

Watching it on the telly I actually asked ‘er indoors if this was the actual game or a re-run of a 1970’s match. The pitch looked like something you’d hesitate to run a half decent nag out on. It was only the haircuts that gave it away.

Here’s my ratings.

Gomes -4 – Easy to chuck him a ‘4’ and mock the flapping, but there isn’t one goalie in the history of goalie-ing that has had a good run with a conveyor belt of makeshift players in front of him.

Begbie0 – I’ve an allergy to stupid people.

Gallas- 5 – Bogged down in the mud.

Dawson- 5.1 – Last seen as a charm on Doyle’s man bracelet.

A&E4.8 – Another sluggish contributor.

Peanut – 5.3 – I’m terrified by him. Too slow. Too not good enough.

Sandro – 7.89 – Proof that mud needn’t stop play if you have class.

Modders 6 – He didn’t click into gear, at all, much. Really.

Jenas5 – Stop falling over you schmuck. Stop it. Just stop. Now.

Pav6 –  Fab goal, afforded few opportunities to do more.

Defoe8 – Rock & Roll baby.

Lennon – 6.1 – Looked okay. Very okay on occasion. We need more!

Bale 6.3 – Oh how we miss you .

Krankie5.9 – Decent bloke, I fear we’ll lose him in August.

I wasn’t happy with yesterday either but a point on that onion field is more than ManU, Chavs, and Shitty got there.

I’m not having any this “our CL push is over” garbage either. Sure, it’d be great if we beat up all the bottom dwellers, and then the games against our immediate rivals wouldn’t mean so much—that is how ManU and the Chav’s win titles. But we are a work in progress still and we don’t do easy. For us, it will be the games against Shitty and the Chavs that tell our season’s tale, not to mention their games against each other. There is plenty to be sorted out yet.

Watched the Chavs beat Blackpool tonight. Chavs second best for long periods but their defence held firm, they hung in there and in the end, they got the goals which gave them a fairly comfortable win. Why can’t we do that ?
Just need to get past Milan then we have 10 days to recover and hopefully get some of our injured players back for the push for fourth place.
Thought they were average in the first leg and there was acres of space down their right side for Bale to exploit, if he is fit.
They also have lots of players out through injury
    and through being cup-tied.
A real chance for us to make the last 8 in CL.

They hung in and got the win away… What? Like we did at Blackburn, Sunderland, Villa, Ar5ena1, Fulham & Stoke you mean (Not forgetting Milan)? On the way to having the second best away record in the PL possibly? No, that couldn’t be us… We’re Southern softies & don’t travel.

We have been hanging in well and defending well in the games you mentioned but not in the last 2 games, where we have conceded 6 goals to teams fighting relegation.
In those 2 games we have been unable to deal with crosses. Chelsea (or should I say Terry) dealt with all of the crosses into their box tonight with little fuss.
If we defend like that against Milan, we will be in real trouble
The defeat to Blackpool was particularly painful as their home form this season has been poor.

Exactly. For some, every dropped point is proof what a bunch useless lady parts populate our team. Have we learned nothing from last season?

  • Astromesmo says:

Detained working like a Trojan for the last few days but managed to catch the game on the radio, just sounded like a cracking game and while I know I’m a ridiculous optimist, I don’t see why so many people are so downbeat.

Last few seasons we’ve had a diabolical record against Wolves and this season we’ve gotten 4 points off them. By my crude maths I think that’s probably about an improvement of about 4 points from our ‘life changing’ CL season.

To top that off, our forwards scored three great goals… Something of a rare bird in the last few months.

There’s a long way to go in this season yet, and let’s not forget how silly a few of us looked last season after declaring the season over and beating up the wife with 10 games to go, eh?

Oh, and by the way, we’re also in the last 16 of the CL, something that was decidedly absent last year. Fat lady? She’s not even finished the entree yet.

Astro! You got my call then?!

I do take your point regarding last season naturally as I was one such doubter. But in my defence, I wasn’t married then :freu

But seriously, the Champions League (hell, any European football for that matter) was going to tax us compared to last season (where we had none).

We can be disappointed, and feel disappointed. We’ve had no real domestic cup runs, and thankfully so, because we’d be even more fucked had we not got our bottoms smacked in those.

We have fallen behind in games far too often this season, and that’s regardless of which competition.

Looking at the same stage last season we had gained an extra point compared to this season. The gap between us and the “relegation fodder” has shrunk, from 25pts last year to 18pts this year, to date. So it looks like we’re almost marching on the spot whilst those below us are improving. I should turn that into a positive, right? Like when looking at yesterday’s result? Also, that must mean that one of these other “teams we’re expected to beat” must have benefitted from the points we last year donated to Wolves. Blackpool perhaps, being one of them.

To expect us to keep having to pull rabbits from hats is unrealistic. It’s only those occasions where we have turned it around, that is separating us from having a simply mediocre league campaign.

I was also hoping you could reassure me about our star January window signing Pienaar? Another Harry bargain, indeed. Any thoughts? He’ll come good, right? Worth picking him up six months early, right?

I seriously don’t know if I could say we’re any better than we were last year, or whether we’ve just caught a few breaks this season, and it’s beginning to show.

  • Chicago Bill says:

why do I get the feeling that Harry believes that CL is more important than PL? I really don’t rate Pienaar as he seems more suited to mid-table struggles rather than high flying football the Spurs way. If we wanted someone like that we should have kept Malbranque. He cannot beat a player as he just isn’t quick enough so its all effort and industry but no class on the ball.
I fear CL for next year is gone (followed by Modric and Bale). Investment last summer in that top striker would have made the difference.

    • Finn says:

Up until year ago, anyone getting into the top 4 other than ManU, Cheatski, the Dippers or the Goons, was basically the pinacle they could be expected to be achieved. Harry’s done the cups, he’s made the top 4 and now he wants a run in the CL and from his perspective, in terms of career achievements, its perfectly understable. It may be a credential-getter for the England role if he does want a crack at it too.

  • Stolenslimmers says:

God noes we where lucky to get a point in the Killing fields the Wolves where starved By Mad Mick. They snarled and snapped at our feet till they blew Gomes down the straw house. Then big ears Grandma Fletcher snatched two points from 4th gear Spurs. The Man of the match Wolves 6th Gear
