Hello Honky Tonks.

We done ’em. Eventually. Which is possibly harsh, but true.

The first half was pretty mediocre. I only watched from about 20 odd minutes in but it was all a bit pace-less. Picture two Championship at Wembley for the first time, trying to get to grips with the size of the pitch and the occasion.

Eventually, Adebayor kept his head and slotted his debut goal away. Not long after Defoe scored, leaving Wolves looking pretty fangless.

On Wolves, a mention of Jamie O’Hara. Something happened at some stage between him and Bale. Maybe Bale isn’t even aware of this thing whatever it is, but in young Jamie’s mind it certainly exists.

Brad  6 Some naff kicks out. Must do better

A&E 7 Bit of a love, really

Walker 6.43 Generally good. Needs a bigger brain

Kaboul  5.98 Frequently in a china shop

King  5  Sluggish

Krankie  5.9 Modest contributions

Modric 7.73 Some sublime balls (that’s what she said) but several wasted

Parker 7.72 Good stuff, looked like a Pathe News clip when running

Bale 7.61 To be frank, he needs to start raising his game soon…

Adebayor 8 He brought hope

Defoe 7 Great little goal from the midget (occasional) gem

szólj hozzá: Wol 0-2 Tot

He might only be with us for a year and if he keeps scoring goals for us he can run about naked with Arsenal shorts on over his head for all I care, well when he isn’t playing a real game… We won one ….. COYS

I noticed that Gomes can’t even make the bench now. It will be interesting to see who gets picked on Thursday.

I have to say that this is a sore point with me, because I think Gomes is by far the best of the three, and I think he has been exposed by HR’s defensive tactics. I recall a time when Gomes was playing “strapped” rather than playing Cudicini.

Apart from Gomes’ ability to make howlers, I have no criticism of any of the GK’s but I suspect that HG will never be first choice again.

He’ll probably be sold in January or put in for a transfer request or whatever. Trout chops has always had a problem with him – I don’t think he can cope with the Latin mentality.

      • Essexian76 says:

“Latin mentality’, like an inability to stand up and be brave instead of crying like a tart, especially after dropping a clanger. You bemoan our lack of striking abilty last season, but Gomes alone accounted for as many points dropped as those ‘we could’ve won” if our mythical WCS had been playing!

““Latin mentality’, like an inability to stand up and be brave instead of crying like a tart.”

Err isn’t that the Latin mentality? Anyway they’re not really crying it’s all an act to get some attention. Hence all the rolling on the floor when they are tackled. As a man manager you just have to learn how to handle it. Trout chops can’t.

PS haven’t you ever heard the the smallest books in the world jokes. No 1 is the Italian book of War Heroes? :-D

        • Essexian76 says:

Well thank the good lord we don’t have any of those then, and an Italian tank had 16 gears- 1 forward 15 reverse-or so I’m told.

If this blog is anything to go by, I think you’ll find ‘The Book of Optimistic Spurs Supporters’ would be a smaller volume.

        • eastanglianspur says:

          You’ve got it 8O

        • Phil McAvity says:

Sometimes when reading some of the comments on here I feel that ‘The Book of Optimistic Spurs Supporters’ could actually be written on the back of a postage stamp!!

        • Phil McAvity says:

But I do love this blog!!

        • eastanglianspur says:

          @ Phil McAvity

Yes it goes hand in hand with the book of Spurs Major Successes in the Premier League. It’s a companion volume and it’s most likely the smallest book in the world – smaller than the book of Italian War Heroes.

        • Phil McAvity says:

East – To be fair I can’t argue with that!! Although it can’t be smaller than the book of Italian War Heroes can it? That book can’t exist!!

        • Billy Legit says:

This would be the same ‘Latin mentality’ that has won 4 World Cups then, right?

How many have we won again?…..i seem to have forgotten…..

        • eastanglianspur says:

@Billy Legit Who said they can’t play football? I’m for Gomes and think he should be our no 1 keeper, even with his Latin mentality.

    • Roasted Peanuts says:

Pick a goal we conceded last season, probably any goal and it will most likely be conceded due to a Gomes error – Both Chelsea games he let in clangers – Arsenal away first goal, came out like a snail ,sent off against Inter, Bolton at home let a Sturridge shot go right through him, Nasri at home against Arsenal, Real Madrid goals at home and away. the daft penalty given away against Blackpool, – there are numerous others – how can he be defended, cos he does that silly touching the crossbar routine before the start of every game? Oh, and he cant kick a ball for toffee. He is a complete liability. Should never get near the bench again for us.

      • SpurredoninDublin says:

Chelsea: You are having a laugh! Which goal was he responsible. You have a choice of three. The one that didn’t cross the line, or the two that were offside? You might as well blame Mendes for not scoring against United when Carrol palmed the ball over the line

If that’s all you know about football, then I will not be bowing to your inferior intellect.

The stats show that he made more saves than any of the top eight G/k’s last season. Why, because of all the top eight G/k’s he was left exposed more than any other GK.

        • Roasted Peanuts says:

whether it crossed the line at Chelsea was irrelevant – it was a ridiculous error in the first place. Wouldnt you acknowledge that? What about Drogba at the lane? Remember that one?

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

          @roasted.

I really can’t get over your comment about Chelsea. It’s like blaming a burglary victim when the police gave the keys of the house to the burglar.

Just in case you are unaware, in his first season with us, we set a record for the least PL home goals conceded (9). In his second season, we were the joint meanest home defence in the PL.

Prior to joining us he held (and still does) the record for the most clean sheets in a season in the Eredivse. That is a league where it is much easier to score in than the PL.

Then of course, as I have already mentioned, last season, he made more saves than any other G/k in the top eight. United/Chelsea etc are not winning games because of their G/k’s, they are winning them because their defences are not letting the opponents have as many shots at their G/k as our defence does.

Notwithstanding the deficiencies of our defence, how many G/k’s last season had to play with seven different C/b’s and three R/b’s.

      • melcyid says:

I used to like buying your peanuts at the lane years ago,but Iaint buyig your line against Gomes. Not worth arguing about your mind is so far gone against him.Gomes easily one of the best in the prem. :daumen:

  • SpurredoninDublin says:

    @roasted.

No. I do not blame him for the ref’s mistakes. Would you blame a burglary victim if the police gave the burglar the keys?

    • Roasted Peanuts says:

I was aware of our defensive record in his first season and I completely agree that our defence have hardly helped him out. My point is that he has made some horrendous individual errors. If you cant acknowledge that it was a howler even letting that shot through his arms then we will never agree on this. You didnt respond to all the other errors he made last season either. Some of them were shocking, regardless of who was in the back four.

  • Essexian76 says:

Taking the CL as a example, Gomes in the games against AC Milan was without question remarkable-against Real-diabolical. You can look at some of his saves and think “unbelievable”, but he’ll do the most basic schoolboy error as well. That aside, it’s his hesitancy that annoy’s me, and with ‘twitchy’ players like Dawson and Kaboul around, its un-nerving and breeds a lack of confidence to area’s where it’s needed most. His presence isn’t reassuring, you always feel there’s a cock-up waiting to happen. Irrespective of Gomes ability-it’s his heart I question most, but if I were replaced by a footballing geriatric I be offski- no question!

    • SpurredoninDublin says:

Have you seen the new Manure H/k. Plenty of howlers, but he has not had the misfortune of letting one of these in yet.

I mentioned in my post @7.59 about his howlers. I am not blind to these, but your description of him as a “Complete Liability” obviously doesn’t gel with the stats that shows he is one of the best.

I hate the howlers, and Robinson was another with that propensity, but as I said earlier, a lot of the problems can be attributed to the defence giving so many shots on goal.

The year we qualified for the CL, we started to believe it was possible when Bale made his breakthrough against Chelsea and Arsenal, games we won, but for all Bale’s wizardry, at the other end of the field, Gomes was making a string of great saves.

      • onedavemackay says:

I agree. Crazy things have happened with Gomes but they don’t happen every match and I think his sensational saves ( ie the beating of Chelsea and the Goons at WHL end of 2009/10) more than make up for it.

He broke records in the Netherlands for fewest goals conceded and did the same at the lane, that’s no coincidence. It may be he needs Gallas or King in front of him to help him make decisions on staying or coming out.

He’d be my first choice every time.

        • Essexian76 says:

I wouldn’t question his ability, never for a moment, but none of you are addressing his heart, his fortitude and if you did you’d find that’s where he’s lacking most of all. His lack of leadership in the area and hesitancy causes just as many problems for our defence as anything and confidence is the be all and end all in that part of the field. Don’t ask our fans-listen to the opposition’s and then tell me what they can see that gives them so much pleasure?

        • eastanglianspur says:

@onedavemackay Spot on – totally agree.

      • Roasted Peanuts says:

Fair enough, complete liability was a little harsh. Every goalie makes howlers – Clemence was the best keeper I have seen at the Lane and he let one through his hands against Barcelona – also at Wembley against Villa if memory serves – The Chelsea games last season hurt us – we were fairly comfortable against them at the Lane until he let Drogba’s shot go right through him – likewise at their place until he let that ‘goal’ in – I also thought he was hesitant coming off his line all season – the Nasri goal at the emirates as an example. He is a confidence keeper and he is going through a period much like Robinson did when with us – Hopefully he will come back a better goalie but he is gonna struggle to get a game at the moment

        • SpurredoninDublin says:

That’s fair enough. Complete Liability rates him like ****s.

As you can guess, I am a fan of his, but I am a fan because all the stats tell me his a class act, and I think that his biggest problem has been an ever changing frequently missing defence. Just my view, but dropping him is like changing the engine on a car because it has a flat tyre.

Whether he can work his way back into contention remains to be seen, but his is still the youngest of the trio.

He reminds me of Gary Sprake, who made many a howler, including throwing the ball into his own net on one occasion. For all that, he is still regarded as Leeds best ever G/k. On the other hand, there is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQbFnZ5MRiI&feature=related

I couldn’t find the Gary Sprake Goal, but this is a Carbon Copy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzNmyaQjQww

  • SpurredoninDublin says:

    @Essex.

The AC win is one I will never forget, and look how the defence performed that night. If the defence performed like that weekly, we could have kept Robinson or even Sullivan.

I have to say that watching Gomes in the Hearts game, it was the worst performance I can recall seeing by a Spurs keeper, and this is a man that desperately needs his confidence rebuilt.
