Good morning fight fans.

Fascinating development in the Jan Vertonghen mini saga as the player has let slip that it’s Spurs that are closest to landing him.

What’s fascinating is that it’s now clear that Arry is not involved in the deal. Only a day or two ago our tight lipped supremo said,

“He is a good player, a player I have looked at and watched, I think there are a lot of clubs interested in him though. So, that is all.

“We haven’t gone anywhere with it. We haven’t spoken to the club. He is just a player I have watched, along with a lot of other players.”

But now Jan himself has said,

“Of course I want Ajax to become financially better, but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay, maybe with a little bit extra, is very reasonable.

“In a year from now I could leave the club for free. I hope Ajax are aware of it as the situation of Maarten Stekelenburg’s transfer was very harsh.

He only arrived at the end of pre-season at AS Roma. I want to flow in fluently, directly with the other Spurs players.

“Tottenham is a fantastic traditional club who play football in a way I like. Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players.”

I’ve been banging the ‘buy a centre back drum’ for some time. This guy would be absolutely perfect and we need to cough up and sign him. Signing Vertonghen would demonstrate to the likes of Modric that we meant business.

Let’s hope Levy & Co. can pull it off!

So because Harry Redknapp says Spurs haven’t contacted the player, that’s the gospel truth. The fact the player says there ARE negotiations COULD mean HR is not involved but I wouldnt say that it is CLEAR he is not involved. If you asked Harry Redknapp if his name was Harry Redknapp, he’d probably tell you he wasn’t too sure about that one, it’s not something he’s thought about so he wouldn’t like to say. MAYBE just maybe he is playing dumb…maybe he does know about talks and maybe he’s being non-commital because there are a million miles to go before a deal is done. 4 weeks ago we were favourites to land Eden Hazard and look whats happened there…I’m sceptical and think that history suggests that the Vertonghen transfer could go the same way. With the exception of the Scott Parker transfer which went on longer than War and Peace, the best transfers are the ones that have been done swiftly and relatively under the radar. As long HR is manager, I am happy for him to be economical with the facts about any potential transfers if it stops us from getting too over-excited at the start and then disappointed when they sign for someone else.

Big game tonight, fellas: come on you Scousers – dig deep and get a point, at least, for the Spurs cause…

According to the BBC, “Liverpool may choose to rest some of the players involved in Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat”

Rest? WTF? Why? What are they resting for: their upcoming holidays? Are 45,000 Liverpool fans gonna be happy about that?!

I’d be getting them all out there, trying to make amends for what they f*cked up on Sunday…

Al, I am hoping for the scousers to put in a good performance for the long hard season they just gone through. What I will get is a torres hattrick and King Kenny Nutting Geoff Shreeves. The rest of the interview will take place from the back of police van. Look out for the DVD of Kenny best postmatch interviews titled ” You looking at me pal “

Why should a manager let the cat out of the bag and alert other clubs, Harry is right to play everything down especially with Spurs oh so fickle fans.

Just because Harry says we haven’t contacted the player doesn’t mean we are not in advanced negotiations with his agent and his club, it just depends how you wan to interpret things. We already know Harry doesn’t deal with transfers just tells the Chairman who he wants, what’s the big deal?

    • Alspur says:

Off to PSG for the cash, then?!

      • LLL says:

Looks a possibility. To be fair, everything he says there is consistent with everything he’s ever said about only being in it for the money and so on. It just kind of reminds me once again that avidly following and caring about the fate of a bunch of mercenary careerists is not really very rational.

he has a “gentlemens agreement” with the Chairman?…well good luck with that one sunshine!
      LOL!
