Evenin’ all.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Willian Borges Da Silva is the name in the frame. And if this has the legs I hope it has we will have snapped up an incredible footballer who would fit seamlessly into the André Villas-Boas’ project.

A 5 year contract signed in 2007 with suggests he’s available on a free.

‘I like to pick the ball up out wide and then dribble lots. As a young boy, I idolised Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. My style is more like Ronaldinho’s, behind the main striker in a No 10 role. In England, I play a little bit like Nani or Luka Modric.’

I like Chelsea and Arsenal’s styles a lot. I’d be very happy to play for Tottenham too and help get them back into the Champions League. They’re a very big  club.’  Daily Mail Aug 2011

A Brazilian that speaks Portuguese. Ooh I say.

Organizanto estas tre talenta kaj krea, kiu aldonas kapablon labori kaj alportu oferon al sia granda vizio.

  • Yachtsman says:

I’ve said it before, individual talent is significant but team cohesion/spirit is just as important. It’s the bedrock. Which is why I mourn Daws’ leaving us.

Yes, yes, the arguments for his being made redundant are realistic, pragmatic, hard headed, business like, etc., etc. Yet in Daws’ case, with what he has contributed, his enthusiasm, loyalty, example, his 100% involvement, I would have liked the club to go another route. Perhaps make him captain of the Europa squad. Loan him out till Jan with the understanding that once he was fully fit a final decision would be made. Show him, and every other player at WHL, that the club appreciates what he has contributed and still may. Loyalty (it used to be called fidelity. I like that word) is a two way street, and team spirit is beyond market determined calculation.

    But I preach.

    • Hartley says:

If only all modern footballers were like Michael Dawson. The man is 100% committed to the football club that pays his wages and honestly gives his all every time he puts on the famous Lilywhite shirt…..
He’s not the greatest player in the world but he gives everything, a breath of fresh air in a stagnant pit of greed and immorality…..COYS :-(

      • MysteriousStranger says:

As loyal as he’s been to us, we’ve been pretty loyal to him too through his injury battles. The loyalty between this club and player has at least been two way throughout.

Luka Modric on the other hand has not reciprocated our loyalty to him.

Which is why when we reminisce about Dawson and Modric in years to come, only one of them will be getting called a cunt.

    • MysteriousStranger says:

There is no room for sentiment in the modern game. This is ably demonstrated by clubs and players alike. A player like Dawson would want to play regularly, so it makes sense that in the final years of his career he may choose to move to a club which could offer a more suitable role in terms of style played and a large number of appearances. As a regular (injury free) he could strengthen his case for a potential England call up or two.

Being made captain of, or simply having his appearances limited to a role in the Europa team would have negative conotations IMO, much in the same way as it did for the likes of Pav last season.

i.e. You’ve been demoted to the “B” team, and since this is to rest players in my “A” team, don’t expect much more.

I like Dawson as a character, but I also think he could struggle in an AVB team. I wish him well.

As for the fee – whether it’s really a flat £5.5m with the potential to rise to £9m based on appearances or a flat £9m – I’d have thought for his injury history and age, we’ll have done pretty well either way.

      • Hartley says:

I couldn’t agree more with pretty much everything you’ve stated but am a bit miffed as to how you get away with saying the ‘c’ word without getting moderated, I get fucking moderated for saying’ boo’ most days….you mysterious bastard…. ;-)

        • MysteriousStranger says:

It was awaiting moderation, so I’m definitely no exception. But I generally call it how I see it.

      • Yachtsman says:

        I disagree, MS.

There is room for sentiment in the modern game. We saw it at WHL just last season when Bolton visited. Nor does it seem that Daws “chose” (of his own free will) to move anywhere. Nor is turning out for the Europa team while regaining fitness and/or demonstrating his ability to adapt to a new gaffer’s ideas in any respect demeaning.

That’s my last comment on the topic.

        • MysteriousStranger says:

          Yachtsman,

Dawson has to agree to the move, so he may choose to do so in the same way Dos Santos chose not to join Udinese. Since there is a difference between clubs agreeing to a fee and a move being additionally sanctioned by the player concerned I am right in saying Dawson he has a choice.

Regarding sentiment, I see a vast difference in the incident you reference to the business aspects and the retaining of players or not.

surprised at Daws but AVB fancies jan, kab, caulker and gallas to give experience..i can see the logic esp if we get 9m, tasty. Love Daws and would give him a huge welcome back when qpr play at WHL.
Ade – polite applause from the pavillion for HH, this blog would have been dust had he not signed lol.
feelin’ groovy now, can relax. Ade – class act.
Hudd – talented like few others and scored some scorchers but avb wants pace so again i wish him well provided we get a top class replacement…although he loses respect for that idiotic tweet about “respect”..muppet.
