Under The Lights At The Lane

A magical phrase.

Working on the basis that after two pretty iffy league games we are in true Tottingham tradditon a good one, I feel quite positive about tonight. With the obvious exception of the long standing gout sufferers and the likely to be  limited contribution from the Boy Bale, we shape up pretty well.

Once the MO’s list is removed from the equation, my next port of call is Begbie & A&E. I am not a stat man. But I know that I’m running out of stuff to throw at the telly as they both commit stupid foul after stupid foul.

As that charmless nurk Van Persie demonstrated last night, the consequences of daftness are unforgiving. Van Persie claiming he couldn’t hear because of the fans. Yes of course. As anyone who’s been to the Camp Nou will tell you, the thunderous volume is possibly at it’s lowest when the away team are attacking. A few thousand Gooners up in the Gods wouldn’t have drowned out a whistle that every other player heard on every occasion for the duration of the match.

Tottingham need to focus on what we do well and not allow the insanity of an individual error sink us. Sounds obvious, but just because we’re suddenly hitting the high life I’d be sickened to watch us become a posse of hard done by whiners.

On a cheerier note I’m looking forward to Sandro playing again. We are constantly reminded about players needing time to bed in, well this guy appears to mastered that transition and gives me every indication he could be central figure for us.

Predictions. Wow. Now you have me.  3MP Anytime Goalscorer in a 3-2 win is a whopping 40/1. Krankie Anytime Goalscorer in a 2-2 draw is 45/1. I think that they will be goals. Lots of ’em. It’ll be a nail-biter. Because that’s the way we do business.

Oh yes, I have been told I’m on p78 (it’s the new page 3) of this month’s Zoo Magazine. I would imagine it’s a hilarious one liner rather than a full and frank confessional.

Watching Fox’s replay of the game with a bit less dread, and seeing that Harry is actively coaching them to park the bus and keep a compact shape in our half. Luka didn’t have quite the horrible game that he’s been accused of. He’s part of a very determined group of players intercepting and blocking passes with very few break downs. Obvious to all was a tremendous reading of the game by Sandro. In the first half, our counter attacks suffered because we had so many players behind the ball and only one winger as an outlet. We looked better when we attacked as a team, keeping more possession in the 2nd half. A risky strategy chosen by Harry, and the boys managed to pull it off.

I wrote something similar above. Not to take anything away from Sandro because he deserves all the praise he’s getting, but Luka, for all the dribbling and passing skills he displays, is willing to do the dirty work, falling back into the right spaces to cover for others and dam up the attacking flow. While I wish he spent more time near the opposition’s box, I wonder if he can count on the same coverage that his partners expect from him.

Watched the replay, too. Second time round, no tension, so there was time to appreciate the many things we did right, in both halves. We almost always kept our shape at the back; in fact, but for the one moment of Gallas’ heroics, we looked far more solid in the first half than I had thought. We could have had a penalty in each half, and you can’t say that for the Milancheeses, though the first time of viewing I had my hand in my mouth with some of A&E’s moves.

What stood out were two things, (1) the way we carried out the game plan of parking the bus intelligently, i.e. our prime concern with defence, and (2) our tactical flexibility, and enterprise, especially in the second half, in taking the game to the other end. Some of our passing and movement were really top rate, and we were unlucky that Crouchie (once again) was given a hard time by the officials. Seems it will always be that way.

    A splendid all round performance.

As I switched the TV off, the dog asked me how come we let in 3 goals to the Seasiders and to the Wolves. You can’t please everyone.

Does anyone know why Bond’s face dropped when we were warming up the stud to come on?

I think it may be VDV has got injured again. This seems to be a re-occurring theme and one that I hope doesnt derail our CL & PL push.
