Some Credible Thoughts On Another Fine Mess

So Manchester United grind out three points. We’re incapable of grinding coffee beans.

West Brom? Sorry to be awfully disrespectful, but this is the side that thought they’d won the lottery when landing Uncle Woy as their supremo.

Believe it or not I stand by Redschnapps. Those amongst you who revel in stats can investigate but he’s worked miracles. He has his limitations but who amongst us doesn’t? As I recall Stephen Fry’s ‘flawed genius’ speech on Cooky. My beef is with the players.

I don’t see much merit in ripping into anyone specifically. But the Tottenham Malaise is still there, still blighting any chances of genuinely advancing as a team, as a club. Gomes is apparently a clown and some wouldn’t send him for a paper.

Gomes is a decent goalkeeper. But I tell you this; you put Van der Sar in a Spurs shirt and watch him haemorrhage goals. There isn’t a keeper in the world that performs well in front of a conveyor belt of defenders. There isn’t a keeper in the world who’s confidence and self belief are impervious to foul ups. It’s a vicious circle and the sooner King & Woodgate are suitably replaced the better.

Our midfield has some absolute quality in it’s number. But Modders is a gem, Rafa a gift, but Bale needs to adapt his game. He’s become a household name and ought not be surprised that people are developing a strategy to nullify him.

Sandro must be encouraged to stamp his mark on proceedings. We’ve been whining on for a dog’s age about a ‘Roy Keane’ type. Pssst wanna know a secret? We’ve got one and his name is Sandro.

Up front I’m swimming against the tide with many of you perhaps. I wouldn’t flog Defoe and 3MP, I’d pop them into one of those charity bags that come through the door and leave them on the curb outside The Lane. Harsh? Neither have scored remotely enough goals. Forget Pete’s one that got us in the Champions League, he took that back when he demanded a red card against Real.

Drawing indoors to West Brom simply isn’t on. If Chelsea don’t wallop West Ham there will be tears before bedtime in the Hotspur caravanette tonight.

Here’s some clips:

Excellent debate. Levy is a great businessman. With him at the helm Spurs will always be a well run club making a profit. After supporting Spurs for over 40 years and seeing maybe 1 or 2 realistic title challenges, I really dont give a feck whether we make a profit. Wasn’t it Levy who didnt take abramovich’s enquiries to buy the club seriously ? I would take a sugar daddy over Levy everyday of the week.

As for HR. I agree his tactics were shoddy yesterday. Didnt seem to have any plan second half at all. Fact is most supporters can see our shortcomings. We need a forward who can dominate games. This summer I believe will show exactly where both Levy and Redknapp are. Can HR spot a player ? Will Levy pay the wages ? Do we sell our crown jewels ? I think HR deserves one more season to see if we go forwards or backwards.

Interesting stat for everyone. In our last nine games against promoted teams we have one victory.
So, still the same old Spurs then.

    • SpurredoninDublin says:

Just a couple of points. We would all take a sugar daddy over Levy, because then we don’t have to live in the real world.

Regarding one more year for HR, if he isn’t jailed after his forthcoming trial, then he is looking to the England job. It seems unlikely we will ever have to sack him.

      • TMWNN says:

Football is no longer in the real world. That’s what you’re failing to recognise.

My point about Spurs being an attractive acquisition was about Spurs not ‘doing a Leeds’ rather than the price Levy would or wouldn’t accept.
If Levy were a bit more ambitious but somehow managed to put the club in real financial difficulty, buyers would be queuing up. Instead, ENIC want maximum return on their ‘asset’ with no outlay. To use a car metaphor if it’s easier for you, Levy wants to sell a second hand motor for top money, without spending any money on a paint job or rust removal.

Whether it’s Redknapp’s fault for thinking we could get away with using clowns in place of forwards, or Levy’s fault for not pushing the boat out that bit further to give us a chance of remaining top 4, league wise, and putting ‘2 from 8’ and ‘CL QFs’ to one side, this season has been a massive opportunity missed through poor management which has turned us into one season wonders.

Again, I have to disagree with you. The real world is that we have a number of turkeys and or players that want to move on, and nobody wants to buy them. The talk is why didn’t we sign Suarez, Carrol, Torres and Dzeko? Answer: Because we couldn’t afford them.
Look at our team, Hutton, Krancjar, Keane, Bentley, O’Hara, and Pav have been looking for a move, and nobody wants to buy them. Palacios sees us a stepping stone, and we have two forwards who are in the England squad, as well as Jenas who can hardly get a game. I actually think Hutton anf Krancjar are worth keeping. Everybody wants to strengthen their teams, but only with loan players. It is only the top six teams in the PL that are prepared to spend big, but as far as that particular league is concerned, we have had face relegation all season.
I don’t get your “attractive proposition” explanation. At the end of the day you will always get people trying to buy on the cheap, if the club was in trouble. Why do you think that someone who wants to buy us on the cheap will be good for the club? Look at Rover cars. BMW gave someone £100 mill to take that off their hands. I would have done it for £50 mill. There is a name for the sort of people who would buy us when we are in trouble: Asset Strippers. Are you seriously recommending that it would be good for us to get into problems so that some asset stripper could move in?
I recognise that there are teams that are living in the real world which includes ours, and then there are teams that in our present circumstances, we cannot hope to live with, and then there are teams like City and Chelsea who don’t have to live in the real world.

I think HR showed his tactical nous with regard to Bent who can definitely score goals. He was scoring goals for us and he scores more for other managers.

We could have had Carol at £20mil, but Levy wouldn’t cough up. Had he done so would Carol have just turned into another Bent, whilst in HR’s ‘care’?

Pav has been kept on the bench nearly all season and IMO now shows signs of a lack of confidence in front of goal.

  • Spurlative says:

Actually reading all of this now is making me angry.
Its so brutally obvious we need a football manager, not a wheeling dealing media smiley wiley. After the WBA game: ‘All I wanna do is go home to my wife and walk the dog’ are u kidding me?? Who says that!??
And come to think of it, even the arse game, we should of won that. We had beaten them the last two games before, but harry’s not peeved, he hails a fantastic game of football. Actually, feck off already!!

  • j says:

The one thing that may persuade our players such as Modric to stay in the summer is the fact that the EURO Championships are at the end of next season. Unfortunately, Wales won’t qualify…

Frankly, I wouldn’t blame any of our top players if they wanted to leave the club if we fail to make the Top 4.

And if we don’t then I’d rather finish 6th than 5th. Apparently, if a club makes the Europa League Final it will only have earnt on average £5m over the entire tournament. Tottenham made around £35m this season for getting to the quarter-final stages of The Champions League.

    • Spurlative says:

      I

    • Spurlative says:

I don’t get this fear of players leaving if we don’t make champs league.
If u ask me they all appear to be quite happy and loyal at the moment.
Where are they gonna go? The only players u could say would be wanted anywhere else would be bale and modric. Vdv maybe. And who is gonna pay what we will want for them? For sure levy will get top dollar if we decide to sell which apparently we won’t.
      The players are under contract.
Why don’t players want to leave arse, but they havnt even won anything in ages..?
Man city never made champs league last year and no one wanted to leave.
If players do want to leave it would be for money not CL football.
Juventus were relegated a couple of seasons ago, no one left…

Sorry. Something went wrong and this post was in reply to TMWNN

        • Harry Hotspur says:

Some excellent points sir and I’m going to use elements in the next blog. Lots of nails whacked square on the head for me, but also just well put :daumen:

        • jfdit says:

most of the turkeys in our squad are stuck at spurs because of the crazy wages they’re on (agreed by levy), his scattergun approach to transfers was the reason we nearly come unstuck a few years back.

I’d also take issue with his so called successes in the transfer market, one or two successes like berba & bale but there are more unreported losses in our transfer dealing than he’d like to admit to hence the rather common ‘fee undisclosed’ statement when a player eventually gets moved on.

        • TMWNN says:

The reason with have too big a squad is down to Levy asking too much for players, rather than no-one wanting them. Not only has this led to millions wasted on wages, but also seen there value depreciate further.

        • eastanglianspur says:

While we’re at it let’s add in Levy’s Ramos debacle which must have cost us more than we’re ever going to be told.

Talking of Berbasulk, I hear there’s a rumour doing the rounds that we might be buying him back for £8mil. :shifty:

Last but not least here’s another poem from my neighbour:

It’s very difficult to win away
Harry ‘Rednap’ was heard to say
It’s also very difficult to win at home
Should be the text of Harry’s next moan
The points Spurs have thrown away is a total disgrace
No wonder they’re out of the Premiership race
Perhaps in the summer window Spurs should clear out the useless bums
Like Daniel Levy, Harry ‘Rednap’ and all their ******* chums.

    • TMWNN says:

The Europa League is still a profitable competition when you include gate receipts. Unlike City fans, our fans are willing to get mugged midweek and weekends. Whether the competition is an unwelcome distraction from getting back into the real show is up for debate, but Redknapp will be hoping we can stave off the dippers for personal reasons rather than what’s best for the club.

      • SpurredoninDublin says:

        @Jfdit.

Not referring to you directly, but there have been plenty of complaints that we can’t sign top players because we won’t pay them enough, and now we can’t sell players because we pay them too much.

Again, not having a go at you, but there is hardly any argument put forward as to why the management is crap, where the opposite view is put forward contradicting this argument to also show why the management is crap.

@HH, thanks for the kind words. It’s easy to have doubts about the reasonableness of an argument when you are the only person making it. I was beginning to get worried.

        • onedavemackay says:

Like H I think your earlier post makes some interesting points.

Anyone who longs for a change in ownership needs to sit down with a strong cup of tea and think carefully what exactly they desire. Would they like any of these new owners?:

          Hicks and Gillette
          Thaksin Shinawatra
          Malcolm Glazer
          Carson Yeung
          Sulaiman Al Fahim
          Peter Ridsdale

I think not and if some hereto unknown billionaire buys us tomorrow there will be no guarantee that we will be any more successful than we are now and most foreign owners have failed to improve the clubs they have bought.

The same goes for a change in management. Arry is probably the best manager we’ve had since Keith Burkinshaw and he’s been at the lane for a little over two and a half years. Think what he might do if he stays for another couple. I don’t think he always gets it right but he seems to have got it right more often than all the other managers we’ve had in the last 20 years.

So replacing him would be another gamble.

Unless we got Mourinho or Guardiola which is lets face it fairly unlikely.
